G33 on Gigabyte…

Author: Paweł Rutkowski

Small update on previous note. I’ve putted GIGABYTE GA-G33M-S2 IG33 S775, 4GB RAM with additional Intel PRO/1000 ethernet on production. It’s running pretty stable on FreeBSD 7-PRERELEASE (i know i should update it), without any slowdowns with 3 jails running and OpenBGPd with 4 peers on it. But there always have to be a “but”.

I’ve fall into problems with re(4) ethernet driver with packet corruption :/ So i had to add additional em(4). But that didn’t helped much. I’ve still been losing packets on vlan enabled interfaces (in my case both of them). Surprising was packets routed through that machine were delivered correctly but packets directed to that machine have a lot of losses.

Solution for that was disabling vlanhwtag with ifconfig command on both interfaces. That machine handles only little traffic so that’s not big issue. I haven’t tried most recent STABLE - maybe it’s fixed there.

Anyway, GIGABYTE GA-G33M-S2 IG33 S775 runs much more as belived than Intel G33 (DG33BU). I have strong felling the re(4) and em(4) problems would appear even there as FreeBSD issue. Now i’m preparing new machine on same board but with 8GB RAM. It’s “burning out” now to see if it’s running stable. So far it is :)

The only one thing i’m missing in both those boards is console redirection - i would be very happy to find non-server-kind motherboard with that feature. If someone knows modern, not super expensive MoBo with possiblilty of redirection before POST to serial - please ping me.
